The latest CKC financial update

Dear CKC Member,

With our short week last week, production of the Bulletin was interrupted. We apologize. On a slightly different note this week, we would like to offer you an overview of a recent meeting with Agriculture Canada.

Subsequent to the June Board meeting, a meeting with Agriculture Canada was held, attended by Directors Cairns and Graveley and the Board Chair. The Agenda was a full one since meetings of this nature have not been frequent through the life of the CKC. Agenda items included the current financial challenges faced by the CKC, workloads that are required of us by Agriculture Canada; our obligations under the APA; procedural interpretations of various Policies; bylaw interpretations and opportunities open to the CKC (building on the experience of other registries).

To read the entire bulletin or any of the previous communications simply login to www.ckc.ca and select Financial Updates from the CKC Services menu.

CKC Strategic Plan available for review

In October 2008 a CKC Strategic Plan was developed and made available to the membership for comment. Now as part of our Financial Recovery initiatives we are proposing that a refocusing of our business strategy will be undertaken using the Strategic Plan as our framework. However, before we begin implementing any fundamental changes we need to hear from you.

We ask you to take the time to read the document and decide what your feelings are regarding the assessments and solutions offered in the plan. Then contact your director and voice your opinion.

To access the CKC Strategic Plan, login to
www.ckc.ca and select it from the CKC Resources menu.

Goals for support of CKC 2011 Business Plan available for review

On June 11 in conjunction with the June Board Meeting, the Strategic Planning Committee led a Board retreat concentrating on a goal-setting exercise in support of the 2011 CKC Business Plan.

Several goals were developed based on the Strategic Plan Objectives and an outlining document was created, which is now available for members to review.

The Dog Days of Summer are the perfect time
to begin planning your RDOG event

Responsible Dog Ownership Day (RDOG) is a national event initiated by the CKC Responsible Dog Ownership Committee and supported by like-minded organizations and individuals across Canada. During the week beginning Saturday, September 25 and including RDOG DAY October 2, 2010, every CKC recognized club is invited to support responsible ownership right in their own communities.

We encourage all clubs to take part by hosting local events with the purpose of educating your local dog owning community.
Events can range from holding a Canine Good Neighbour Program, organizing an obedience demonstration at a recreation centre, speaking to a class of school children, or discussing canine safety with businesses whose staff frequently come into contact with dogs. The ideas are only limited by the imagination of your Responsible Dog Ownership Group.

For more information and materials to help you promote your local event go to
www.ckc.ca and click on the RDOG logo. And, be sure to join the national walk of support for responsible dog ownership on RDOG DAY October 2, 2010.

Dropping into the office?

As we continue to move forward with streamlining the operations
of the CKC we would like our members to realize that if a personal visit to the CKC office is necessary and you wish to meet with a Client Services Representative we encourage you to contact us before "dropping in". By doing this you can avoid the wait time
for a Representative to become available and we can serve you better...so please contact us in advance and remember our office
is "dog friendly" so don't hesitate to bring the pooch!

A Heartworm Disease - An Easily Preventable Problem

2008 AVC Award

Heartworm disease was first discovered
in Canada in 1976
and there has been
a lot of progress in medical treatment since then.
Despite the advances, veterinarians still discover pets with this disease as it quickly spreads across the country through infected mosquitoes. Preventing this potentially fatal disease before it harms your pups
is key.
